Kubla Cubed review
Free, terrain-focused earthwork estimating with phased cut-and-fill modeling.

Kubla Cubed is Windows desktop software for earthwork contractors, estimators, quantity surveyors and civil engineers. It imports site information from PDF and CAD drawings, LandXML, survey points and other data, then creates existing and proposed terrain surfaces. Users can compare surfaces for cut-and-fill volumes, organize work into phases, adjust formation levels, swell and compaction, create cross sections, and export reports, spreadsheets, CAD drawings and LandXML data.
Its freemium structure gives small teams a permanent Free plan with limited features, a project reader and forum support. Subscription provides a single-user license for two devices with updates and support included. Perpetual keeps the single-user license from expiring and includes one year of support. Enterprise adds flexible licensing, a single invoice, support during the agreement term and optional bespoke training. A 14-day trial is also available, while the free Lite edition has no time limit.
The standout capability is phased, TIN-based terrain analysis: projects can model proposed levels and calculate cut-and-fill while accounting for swell and compaction. Mixed plan inputs and exports suit workflows that move between survey data, CAD drawings, spreadsheets and surface files, with AutoCAD listed as an integration. The trade-off is a Windows-only desktop deployment and a narrow estimating scope without a material cost database. Choose Kubla Cubed when terrain and volume modeling are the priority; teams needing browser access, multi-platform deployment or cost-database workflows should consider alternatives.
Kubla Cubed pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Free plan never expires and supports basic terrain and cut-and-fill work
- TIN-based phased modeling handles swell, compaction and formation adjustments
- Imports PDF, DWG/DXF, LandXML and survey data; exports reports and CAD
- Where it doesn't
- Windows-only desktop deployment limits cross-platform access
- Free edition has limited features and works as a project reader
- No material cost database for cost-based estimating
