KRetro review
A focused, open-source frontend for Linux and Plasma retro gaming.

KRetro is a Qt/Kirigami Libretro frontend from KDE for playing retro-console games with ROMs and compatible cores. It is aimed at Linux users who want a focused game library and player that fits Plasma Desktop, Plasma Mobile, or Plasma Bigscreen. The initial alpha supports NES, SNES, Game Boy Advance, Sega Master System, and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Users supply the game ROMs, while KRetro provides the frontend experience, input configuration, and save-state tools.
Its strongest fit is the KDE and Plasma ecosystem. The interface is designed across desktop, mobile, and Bigscreen environments, giving it a narrower platform focus than a cross-platform frontend. The published category capabilities include controller navigation, library import through detected ROM files, and bundled emulators through Libretro cores. Linux distribution packages and a Flatpak-based installation are documented, while the nightly Flatpak includes Libretro cores. That combination suits users who already organize their games locally and prefer a Plasma-native interface.
KRetro also keeps its scope clear. Keyboard and controller input mapping, per-game save-state management, and automatic save and restore through a default save slot cover the core convenience features for supported systems. However, the initial release is version 0.0.1 and is identified as an alpha that is not feature complete. Metadata scraping is not included, so the library experience centers on detected ROM files rather than automated enrichment. Choose KRetro if you want a free, open-source frontend for a minimal Linux and Plasma setup with a defined set of consoles. Choose another frontend if you need broader system coverage, metadata scraping, or support beyond Linux and Plasma.
