Our verdict on Komicove (formerly PANEL Comic Book Reader)
Komicove, formerly PANEL Comic Book Reader, is a free, open-source app for readers who keep comic files on Windows, Linux, or Android. It focuses on local reading rather than account-based services: libraries show covers, support search and favorites, track saved reading progress, and can be organized into collections. The app works with local files without an account or internet connection, making it a fit for solo readers building a personal archive across desktop and mobile devices.
Platform coverage is a central strength. Komicove reads CBZ and ZIP files on Windows, Linux, and Android, while CBR/RAR and 7Z/CB7/TAR/CBT support depends on platform requirements. Watched folders can help maintain a library, although folders need manual refresh. The reader itself offers zoom, bookmarks, double-page display, vertical reading, and manga mode. Windows and Android also include experimental guided panel reading, giving users a panel-focused option while it remains a work in progress.
The product suits readers who want a free local library with practical organization and several display choices, especially those using Windows, Linux, or Android. It is less suitable for people seeking cloud-based access, since cloud sync is not part of the listed category capabilities, or for readers who require uniformly available archive-format support on every platform. Users who depend on guided panel reading as a polished primary mode should also look elsewhere. For a local-first collection, however, Komicove combines library management and format support without a subscription.
