Khala, officially renamed Shao, is an open-source music-generation system for researchers and developers who want to generate complete songs from text descriptions and lyrics. It runs through a web interface but is designed for self-hosted deployment rather than a hosted consumer subscription. The project combines model checkpoints with a frontend web UI, FastAPI backend dispatcher, and single-GPU inference worker, making it a technical option for teams comfortable managing their own infrastructure.

Its main technical distinction is the full-song generation pipeline. The system uses a unified 64-layer residual-vector-quantization acoustic-token representation, followed by separate coarse-to-fine stages for musical structure and audio detail. That design supports conditioning from both natural-language prompts and lyrics, while keeping the project focused on complete song creation rather than a narrower tool for short clips or isolated sounds. Docker and NVIDIA Container Toolkit instructions also provide a defined deployment path for compatible environments.

The trade-off is operational and licensing scope. The published project description calls for an NVIDIA GPU with at least 24 GB of VRAM, so this is better suited to researchers and developers with suitable hardware than to casual creators seeking immediate browser-based generation. The model repository lists CC BY-NC 4.0 terms, which do not permit commercial use. Choose Shao when self-hosting, source access, and full-song generation are priorities; choose another product when you need a consumer subscription workflow, commercial rights, or a lighter hardware requirement.
