Our verdict on Kanji Tree

Kanji Tree is a browser-based Japanese learning app centered on a guided path and visual kanji trees. It suits solo learners who want a balanced mix of kanji recognition, reading, vocabulary, speaking and writing practice rather than a tool focused on only one skill. Study options also include audio exercises, a commute-oriented shadow loop, typing practice, stroke-order tracing, JLPT mock tests, spaced review, progress tracking and daily challenges. The first four stages are free, so learners can begin without buying full access.

Its breadth is the clearest reason to consider it. Kanji study is paired with vocabulary and sentence practice, while speaking exercises include speech grading and writing practice covers both typing and stroke tracing. The visual tree format offers another way to explore kanji, and the Guided Path organizes study into stages. Mock JLPT paper tests and spaced review add assessment and repetition to the mix. This range may appeal to learners who want several kinds of practice in one browser-based app; those seeking a single-purpose speaking or writing tool may prefer a narrower fit.

According to the published plan, Full access costs $9.99 as a one-time purchase. It unlocks the rest of N5, N4, N3, N2 and N1, over 2,100 kanji, N5 vocabulary, every drill mode and tree, as well as future refinements and features. That makes the paid tier a straightforward choice for learners who want the complete course rather than the first four free stages. The main platform trade-off is that Kanji Tree is web-only, and progress is stored in the browser. Learners who want study across a listed range of platforms or browser-independent progress should look elsewhere; web learners comfortable with browser-stored progress have a more natural fit.
