Our verdict on Kairo
Kairo is a free, open-source Android reading app for people who want speed-reading tools alongside a conventional ebook reader. It supports DRM-free ebooks and documents, with adaptive RSVP, Bionic Reading and standard page-based reading in one app. Readers can adjust pacing, typography, brightness and focus controls, while chapters, tables of contents, bookmarks and progress tracking support longer books. Kairo supports Android 7.0 and newer, making it a focused choice for Android users who want local reading and several ways to process text.
Its broad import support is a clear strength. Kairo handles EPUB, MOBI, PRC, AZW, FB2, PDF, DOCX, TXT, Markdown and HTML files, provided the content is DRM-free. PDFs need selectable text, so scanned documents are not a natural fit. The app stores books, bookmarks, progress and preferences locally and works without accounts, which suits readers who prefer a self-contained Android library. Full-screen focus mode and optional Android Do Not Disturb integration further support distraction-reduced reading.
The reading modes are the main differentiator. Adaptive RSVP uses ORP alignment and adjustable timing, Bionic Reading presents timed text chunks with emphasized word beginnings, and the conventional reader provides familiar navigation. Themes and controls let readers tune pacing, typography, brightness and focus to match the format or task. Kairo should suit Android ebook readers who value format breadth, local storage and flexible pacing without a paid tier. It is less suitable for iPhone or desktop readers, people dependent on DRM-protected books, or buyers specifically seeking verified comprehension training.
