Our verdict on JustATuner
JustATuner is a free, open-source desktop tuner for musicians who want more than a basic pitch indicator. Its core is a 12-wheel chromatic stroboscopic tuner, supported by configurable reference pitch, transposition for concert, B♭, E♭, and F, and per-wheel or per-octave cents bias. It is available for Windows, Apple Silicon macOS, and Linux, making it a fit for musicians practicing or analyzing intonation at a computer. The product is less suited to players looking for a quick mobile tuning app.
Its strongest area is advanced intonation work. JustATuner combines live interval analysis, cents readout, and a locked indicator with a just-intonation drone that offers selectable roots, voicings, interval meters, and sine, harmonic-stack, or WAV-sample sounds. The configurable A=440, 441, and 442 Hz reference pitches add useful flexibility for different rehearsal and performance contexts. Per-wheel and per-octave bias controls further support users who want to examine tuning relationships rather than simply match a note.
The visual side is unusually broad for a tuner, with Lissajous, waveform, spectrum, waterfall, warp, and garden visualizers. That breadth gives advanced users several ways to interpret pitch and sound, although it can be more than a beginner needs for straightforward tuning. The main tradeoff is platform scope: JustATuner requires a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer, so it is not a choice for phone- or tablet-based practice. Choose it for desktop-based exploration of stroboscopic tuning, drones, and interval behavior; choose a simpler alternative if minimal controls or mobile access matter more.
