Judicex is an open-source, local-first legal AI workspace for lawyers and legal teams handling private research and matter work. It combines a local SQLite knowledge base with matter and folder management, versioned documents, source bundles driven by Normattiva, and uploads for PDF, DOCX, text, Markdown, CSV, JSON, and image files. Its workflow-based analysis supports proof profiles and next actions, while grounded answers use evidence-bound citations. Drafting is available in a split view with DOCX and PDF export.

The strongest fit is for teams that want control over their working environment and model provider. Judicex supports local Ollama models alongside OpenAI, Anthropic, and OpenAI-compatible providers. OCR for scanned PDFs runs through Ollama, and the project includes a Flask web interface, command-line utilities, and an MCP stdio server for MCP-aware clients. Optional matter-file encryption, backup, and restore add practical controls for locally managed workflows. These capabilities make it suitable for assembling versioned research collections and connecting analysis with drafting rather than treating legal AI as a standalone chat interface.

The trade-off is deployment maturity. Judicex is described as v0.2.0-alpha and intended for local development and private evaluation, so organizations should expect additional engineering before using it for production, public-internet exposure, multi-tenant hosting, or audited regulatory workloads. A managed cloud version with multi-tenant deployment, SSO, and audit features is planned rather than part of the current product. Choose Judicex when self-hosting, source control, and evidence-linked work matter most; choose an alternative when you need a ready-made enterprise service, broad verified jurisdiction coverage, or established multi-tenant administration.

Judicex pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Versioned local knowledge bases for official and private documents
    • Evidence-bound citations, workflow analysis, and proof profiles
    • Supports Ollama, OpenAI, Anthropic, and OpenAI-compatible providers
  • Where it doesn't
    • Alpha prototype rather than production SaaS
    • Not designed for public internet or multi-tenant hosting
    • Jurisdiction and primary-source coverage remain limited in scope
