JSNES review
A free, open-source NES emulator library for browser and Node.js applications.

JSNES is an open-source JavaScript library for developers building NES emulation into browser or Node.js applications. It loads NES ROM data from strings, Uint8Array, or ArrayBuffer, emulates video and audio, and accepts keyboard and gamepad input. The browser frontend provides canvas rendering, frame timing, keyboard controls, and gamepad support. Its free model and Apache-2.0 license make it suited to projects that need an embeddable NES engine rather than a ready-made desktop emulator.
Its strongest fit is integration flexibility. The NES class exposes lower-level controls for custom rendering and audio handling, while audio sample callbacks support application-specific audio pipelines. Developers can connect the library with Webpack, React, or custom Node.js applications. Two-player controller input and Zapper light-gun input extend the interaction model beyond basic keyboard play, and save-state serialization and restoration provide a defined way to preserve emulator state within an application.
JSNES is narrower than a consumer-focused emulator because application integration is part of the product's purpose. It does not provide the standalone desktop experience of a packaged emulator, and it lacks documented rewind, cheat, and netplay features. Choose it when browser or Node.js embedding, custom rendering, audio control, ROM-loading flexibility, or programmatic state handling matters most. Choose an alternative when the priority is a ready-to-run desktop interface or built-in convenience features for advanced gameplay and multiplayer workflows.
