Our verdict on JPlag
JPlag is an open-source tool for finding similarities among multiple programs and identifying possible plagiarism or collusion. It is primarily suited to programming education, where institutions need to compare student submissions locally, but it can also examine duplicated or slightly modified source-code modules. JPlag provides command-line analysis, a Java API for external projects, a local report viewer, and reports in JPlag and CSV formats. It supports numerous programming and modeling languages.
Its main strength is the depth of its source-code comparison. JPlag parses syntax and program structure rather than comparing raw bytes, which supports analysis of substantially modified submissions. Token normalization is available for Java and C++, while obfuscation-resistant match merging helps combine related matches. Base-code exclusion can remove shared starter code from comparisons, and comparisons with previous cohorts support longitudinal review. Clustering and frequency analysis add ways to examine patterns across a group rather than only individual pairs.
JPlag is distributed as open-source software, with analysis running locally and source code and plagiarism results not uploaded. The CLI fits repeatable institutional workflows, while the Java API supports integration into external projects. The trade-off is that institutions must operate the self-hosted setup themselves. JPlag is a strong choice for programming departments and other organizations that need local, structure-aware code comparison. Organizations seeking URL checking, academic-source checking, or a broader plagiarism workflow should choose a product designed around those areas instead.
