Our verdict on Jamulus
Jamulus is free, open-source software for musicians, singers, bands, choirs, teachers, and students who want to rehearse, jam, or perform remotely. Its client-server architecture sends participant audio to a server, mixes it, and returns the result to connected clients with low latency. Sessions can use public or private servers, while participants can adjust personal mixes, mute themselves, and communicate through text chat. Desktop clients are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with experimental support for Android and iOS.
The pricing model is straightforward: the Free and open-source plan costs 0 and includes real-time online music collaboration, client and server software, and GPL-licensed open-source software. There are no paid tiers to compare. The software also supports self-hosted servers, including headless Linux servers, giving technically capable teams control over their server environment. An experimental JSON-RPC server control API is available for server management scenarios, while integrations include JACK, PipeWire, ASIO, and MIDI.
Jamulus is strongest when the priority is live, low-latency audio rather than organizing complete music projects. Its personal mixer includes faders, mute, solo, pan, and groups, with stereo and mono modes plus an optional local reverb effect. That makes it suitable for remote rehearsals, teaching, and performance-oriented sessions. It is less suited to teams seeking full DAW collaboration, native plugin workflows, or documented synchronization with a DAW. Choose Jamulus for free real-time playing and flexible server options; choose another tool when project editing and DAW integration are central requirements.
