Our verdict on iPeer

iPeer is an open-source web application for instructors managing peer evaluations in team-based learning and project-based courses. It supports point-distribution evaluations, custom rubrics, mixed question formats, student comments, self-evaluation, evaluation scheduling, result review, and exports. Institutions can deploy it on their own infrastructure, with web, self-hosted, and API access. Its focus is instructor-managed assessment rather than automated peer-review allocation.

The evaluation workflow is its clearest strength. Instructors can create rubrics with performance levels and criteria, combine scaled and written questions, set release windows and due dates, apply late penalties, and control when students see results. Email reminders and scheduled notifications support the assessment cycle, while results can be exported to CSV, Excel, or text. Manual and CSV-based student and group management, along with student self-registration, provide flexibility for different course workflows. Moderation tools, instructor-controlled result release, and grade sync further support structured review.

Its ecosystem fit is practical for institutions using Blackboard Learn or Canvas. Officially described workflows cover course, roster, group, and grade processes, making iPeer more suitable for learning environments that already rely on those platforms. The main trade-off is operational: reviewer assignment remains manual, and the project’s maintenance is sporadic. Instructors who want open-source deployment, configurable rubrics, and control over evaluation timing should consider iPeer. Teams that prioritize automated reviewer allocation, more actively maintained software, or less manual administration should choose another peer-assessment system.
