Inkwell review
A focused offline screenplay editor for Mac and iPhone writers.

Inkwell is a screenplay editor for macOS aimed at writers who want industry-standard formatting alongside local, offline script management. It supports outlining, inline notes, revision tracking, and imports and exports for Final Draft FDX and Fountain, plus PDF export. Its optional Quill assistant works inside the script for brainstorming, dialogue suggestions, character voice checking, and proposed revisions that the writer explicitly approves. An accompanying iOS Reader supports access on iPhone, with optional encrypted sync.
The pricing structure keeps the core editor free forever, including unlimited scripts, screenplay editing, file import and export, notes, outlining, revision tracking, and offline operation. Quill starts with a 7-day free trial, then uses one-time credit packs at $4.99 per 150 credits, with credits consumed when Quill answers. Writers who want recurring access can choose Quill Pro monthly at $10 per month for 500 credits, add-on packs, priority support, and early access. The annual plan costs $100 per year, includes 500 credits monthly, and adds two months free alongside the same paid benefits.
Inkwell’s strongest fit is for individual screenplay writers who prefer local files, focused formatting, and control over AI changes rather than automatic rewriting. Final Draft FDX and Fountain support make it practical for workflows built around those screenplay formats, while offline operation suits writing away from a connection. The tradeoff is platform scope: the editor is for macOS, while iOS access is provided through a Reader, so it is not a broad cross-platform writing environment. It also does not provide collaboration features. Choose Inkwell for a Mac-centered solo workflow with optional AI help; choose another tool if team collaboration or platforms beyond macOS and iOS are central requirements.
