Imixs-Workflow is an open-source Java workflow engine for developers building business process applications. Its core model combines BPMN 2.0 workflow modeling with human-centric task assignment, business rules, document persistence, reporting, and event processing. The product is aimed at teams developing transactional workflow applications and business process management systems, rather than users looking for a visual, hosted automation service. It is distributed under the Eclipse Public License 2.0 and supports API and self-hosted deployments.

Its strongest area is the depth of the workflow engine. Human task routing, conditional event processing, asynchronous and transactional events, scheduled workflow events, reminders, document search, and access control lists address several parts of a business process in one system. The RESTful API extends across workflows, models, reports, and documents, while plugins and adapters provide an extension path for application-specific requirements. This makes Imixs-Workflow a fit for developers who need BPMN-based processes with persistence, rules, and authenticated services rather than a narrow task automation layer.

Platform fit is centered on the Java enterprise ecosystem. The engine runs in Jakarta EE environments and integrates with Jakarta EE, WildFly, Payara, Apache TomEE, REST API services, and Docker. Docker-based microservice deployment adds an option for teams structuring workflow services as deployable components. The tradeoff is its implementation focus: teams seeking a hosted no-code automation tool, broad consumer-app connectivity, or a less developer-oriented onboarding path should choose an alternative. Imixs-Workflow is better suited to organizations with Java and self-hosted deployment capabilities that need open-source BPMN services, secure access controls, and extensible process logic.
