Our verdict on iCloud Mail

For people who use Apple devices, iCloud Mail provides an @icloud.com address and keeps mail changes and settings synchronized across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, and iCloud.com. It also works with Apple Mail and Microsoft Outlook. The service includes folders, filtering rules, junk-mail management, archiving, and up to three @icloud.com aliases, making it suited to personal email that needs to follow its owner across devices rather than a standalone mailbox detached from the wider iCloud account.

The free iCloud 5GB plan includes 5 GB of storage shared between mail and other iCloud data. Paid iCloud+ tiers expand storage: 50 GB adds Custom Email Domain, Hide My Email, and iCloud Private Relay; 200 GB adds family sharing, and the 2 TB, 6 TB, and 12 TB tiers include the features of the preceding tier, with family sharing included from 200 GB upward. A custom email domain therefore means choosing iCloud+, while users who mainly need an @icloud.com address can start with the free plan. Storage headroom matters because email shares the free allotment with other iCloud content.

For sending large files, standard messages are limited to 20 MB, while Mail Drop supports attachments up to 5 GB. That distinction makes iCloud Mail more capable for occasional large attachments than the standard message limit suggests, but Mail Drop does not change the stated limit for standard messages. Choose it if synchronized access across Apple devices, aliases, or iCloud+ domain features fit your needs. If you need a mailbox whose storage is separate from other iCloud data, or do not want a custom-domain feature tied to iCloud+, another service may fit better.
