Our verdict on HomeGallery

HomeGallery is an open-source, self-hosted web gallery for browsing personal photos and videos stored on local hardware. It is aimed at technically capable individuals who want a mobile-friendly way to organize and explore their own media without relying on a cloud service. Photo and video browsing, tagging, an infinite stream with virtual scrolling, and flexible search expressions form the core experience across web, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Its strongest area is media discovery. Face recognition, similar-face search, AI-powered similar-image discovery, reverse geolocation, and map browsing give users several ways to find content beyond folders or filenames. Integrations with Nominatim and OpenStreetMap support location-based browsing, while Docker provides a documented deployment path. Progressive web app support, Chromecast integration, video transcoding, and static gallery export also extend how the library can be viewed or shared.

The trade-off is that HomeGallery is a technical, self-managed product. Its documentation describes it as a spare-time project requiring CLI or terminal interaction, so it suits users comfortable managing local infrastructure more than people seeking a guided hosted service. Authentication is configurable, but the default gallery has no authentication, and original media downloads are not supported. Choose HomeGallery for self-hosted discovery, local media control, and public gallery exports; choose another photo-sharing product if you need built-in community features, original-media downloads, or a less technical setup.
