Hexel is a cloud runtime for engineering teams operating production AI agent fleets. It groups agents into fleets with shared identity, budgets, policies, approvals, and guardrails, while recording actions and outcomes for review. The API supports integrations with LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI, AutoGen, OpenAI, Anthropic, Vercel AI, Pydantic AI, Temporal, and Kubernetes. Its fit is strongest for small, mid-market, and enterprise teams managing multiple agents or regulated workflows.

The governance and observability layer is the main reason to consider Hexel. Its policy engine can allow, deny, or route actions for human approval before execution. Trace DAGs connect plans, decisions, tool calls, and outcomes, while run replay supports debugging and audit work. Immutable audit logs can stream to SIEM systems, and HFU cost attribution organizes spend by fleet, task, and team. These capabilities give operators a shared view of behavior, controls, and operating cost rather than treating each agent as an isolated application.

Plans scale from Hobby to Enterprise. Hobby includes one governed fleet, a serverless plane, 10 HFU per month, community support, and 7-day trace retention. Team adds unlimited fleets, Serverless and Fluid planes, 1,000 HFU per month, approval workflows, email and chat support, and 30-day retention. Scale adds the Dedicated plane, volume HFU pricing, SSO, advanced RBAC, priority support, and 90-day retention. Enterprise adds private or VPC isolation, custom audit and SIEM streaming, a dedicated SLA, solutions engineering, and unlimited retention. Hexel is a strong fit for teams prioritizing governance and traceability; teams needing self-hosting should choose an alternative.

Hexel pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Trace DAGs, replay, and immutable audit logs support investigation.
    • Policies cover allow, deny, and human-approval rules before execution.
    • HFU attribution breaks costs down by fleet, task, and team.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Cloud-only deployment does not suit self-hosted environments.
    • Longer trace retention and advanced controls require higher tiers.
    • Dedicated isolation and custom SIEM streaming are limited to Enterprise.
