Our verdict on Hanasuka

Hanasuka is a free Japanese-learning course for independent learners who want a balanced foundation in JLPT N5–N3 material. Its web app and companion Apple app cover kana, kanji, grammar, vocabulary, phrases and Japanese history. The course pairs 39 theory units with 39 spoken lessons containing 314 cumulative phrases, giving learners both structured study and spoken content. It also includes additional kanji coverage through N1, beyond the level range of its theory course.

Practice spans listening, speaking, writing and review. Phrases, kana and kanji have audio, with slower playback available; pronunciation exercises use browser speech recognition. Kana and kanji handwriting tracing adds a writing component, while vocabulary, phrase and kanji filters let learners focus quizzes on selected material. Spaced repetition schedules completed content for daily review. Account-based progress synchronization means study can continue across devices; the web app supports phones and computers, and the Apple listing identifies iPhone, iPad and Mac compatibility. This breadth makes Hanasuka a fit for solo learners who want several core practice modes in one free course.

The service has no paid plan, trial or advertising, so there is no tier choice to weigh. Support is through email and documentation, rather than 24/7 support. The main boundary is the JLPT theory range: learners seeking a structured course beyond N3 may need another resource, even though kanji content extends through N1. Pronunciation practice also depends on browser speech recognition. Choose Hanasuka for free, multi-device fundamentals and varied independent practice; look elsewhere if advanced JLPT theory or a different support model is central to your study.
