Our verdict on Halcyon

Halcyon is a free, pre-1.0 Android softphone for SIP calling, aimed at people who want native Android call handling with the option to self-host its architecture. It supports multiple SIP identities, per-call account selection, and SIP registration over UDP, TCP, or TLS. The app is distributed through signed APK releases while its Play Store listing is pending, making it a fit for Android users comfortable with that distribution model and for teams evaluating a self-hosted deployment.

Its strongest area is Android and SIP integration. Halcyon uses the PJSIP and pjsua2 SIP/media stack, Android Telecom ConnectionService, and Firebase Cloud Messaging for call-aware push notifications without maintaining a persistent registration connection. Default-dialer support covers tel: and sip: intents, while Bluetooth and Android Auto provide additional audio-routing options. Audio and video codec support, SRTP encryption, and AEC3 echo cancellation give the calling feature set useful technical depth for a free client.

The published Free plan allows installation and use during pre-1.0 development. That keeps the entry point straightforward, but the product remains in active development, and version 1.0 pricing and licensing are planned for announcement before launch. Halcyon should appeal to Android SIP users who value multiple accounts, push calling, native Telecom behavior, and self-hosting. It is less suitable for organizations that require a desktop or browser softphone, or for buyers seeking a mature release with a settled commercial model.
