GtkRadiant review
A free, focused toolkit for building and compiling 3D id Tech game levels.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
GtkRadiant is an open-source desktop editor for constructing levels in games powered by id Tech engines. It is aimed at individual modders and commercial development teams working on 3D maps, with tools for brushes, curve patches, entities, textures, models, terrain, and map compilation. Support for Windows, macOS, and Linux makes it available across the major desktop platforms, while its free model and modifiable codebase suit projects that want to inspect, fork, or adapt the editor.
Its strongest fit is the breadth of the level-building workflow in one tool. Designers can place weapons, lights, triggers, models, and spawn points; manage textures, sounds, and models; create terrain with meshes, brushes, and height maps; and work with shaders. The included Q3Map2 compiler keeps level compilation within the toolchain. Gamepacks extend the editor across multiple id Tech-based games, although individual game support can involve separately installed gamepacks. Choose GtkRadiant when the project is centered on id Tech and needs a free editor with construction, asset management, and compilation capabilities together.
The trade-off is its narrow engine focus. GtkRadiant is not presented as a general-purpose editor for unrelated game engines; its feature set and game support are organized around id Tech-based titles. The project is maintained by community volunteers, and the open-source codebase provides room for modification rather than a fixed, closed workflow. It is a strong choice for id Tech modding and development teams, but projects targeting other engines should choose a tool aligned with those engines instead.
