  • Where it wins

    • CUDA-accelerated differentiable rasterization with Python bindings and pip installation
    • Batching, depth/features, sparse gradients and multi-GPU rasterization
    • Real-time large-scene rendering with PLY, Splat and compressed PLY exports
  • Where it doesn't

    • Requires developers to integrate the library into their own applications or pipelines
    • Self-hosted, local processing places environment and GPU setup on the team
    • Not a hosted capture or publishing application

Our verdict on gsplat

gsplat is an open-source Python library from the Nerfstudio Project for CUDA-accelerated, differentiable rasterization of 3D Gaussians. It targets developers and researchers who need GPU kernels and bindings for training or rendering Gaussian-splat scenes inside their own applications. The package supports Windows and Linux, can be installed through pip or built from source, and runs through self-hosted, local processing rather than a hosted service. Its free, open-source model suits solo developers and small to mid-market teams that want direct control over their rendering pipeline.

Its standout capability is the breadth of rasterization features exposed in one developer library. Teams can batch rasterization across scenes and viewpoints, render depth and N-dimensional features, and use sparse-gradient or multi-GPU distributed rasterization. Anti-aliasing, AbsGS and 3DGS-MCMC techniques extend the implementation beyond basic Gaussian rendering, while real-time rendering of large scenes supports interactive applications. Standard exports to PLY, Splat and compressed PLY formats help move generated data into downstream tools and workflows.

The trade-off is a narrow, integration-focused scope. gsplat provides the core rasterizer and Python access, but application teams remain responsible for building surrounding capture, training, interface and publishing experiences. Local deployment also means the project fits organizations prepared to manage their CUDA environment and GPU resources. Choose gsplat when you need an open codebase, batching, feature or depth output, distributed rasterization and control over pipeline architecture. Choose a hosted capture or publishing product instead when you want an end-user workflow rather than a rendering library.
