Our verdict on GraphDB
GraphDB is an RDF-based semantic graph database for organizations building and managing knowledge graphs. It is suited to teams that need RDF and SPARQL support alongside ontology-driven inference, consistency checking, custom reasoning rules, visual graph exploration, and repository administration. Its Workbench manages repositories, data, users, and access roles, while the product supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, and API access. Both independent developers and larger organizations can use the product through separate free and enterprise editions.
GraphDB Free includes RDF 1.1 and SPARQL 1.1 compliance, RDFS, OWL 2 RL, and OWL 2 QL reasoning, a Workbench interface, community support, and a single-core license. GraphDB Enterprise adds parallelized concurrent query and inference processing, high-availability clustering, optional commercial SLA support, and on-premise or SaaS availability. Enterprise pricing is custom. Starting with GraphDB 11.0, every edition requires a valid license, including GraphDB Free. Teams evaluating the free edition should therefore account for its licensing requirement and single-core scope, while organizations needing concurrent scaling or failover should assess Enterprise.
The product also fits environments that need to move RDF data between repositories, files, URLs, HTTP, SPARQL, and ImportRDF, with support for formats including Turtle, Turtle-star, N-Triples, N-Quads, JSON-LD, RDF/XML, TriG-star, and BinaryRDF. Connectors for Lucene, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Solr, Kafka, and MongoDB extend its role alongside RDF4J-based workflows. GraphDB is a strong choice for teams that need a wide RDF feature set, semantic reasoning, visualization, and deployment flexibility. Teams seeking a simpler graph tool, a publicly listed Enterprise price, or more than a single core in the free edition should look elsewhere.
