Our verdict on GPS Photo Tracker

GPS Photo Tracker is a free, open-source desktop application for matching camera photos with timestamped GPS tracks and writing coordinates to EXIF metadata. It is aimed at solo photographers and small teams who want a cross-platform way to geotag batches rather than assign locations one image at a time. Prebuilt packages are available for Windows, macOS and Linux, and a command-line mode supports automation.

Track handling is a central strength: the application imports GPX, KML, TCX and FIT files with auto-detection, then interpolates photo positions between track points. A two-pass neighbor-following matching method helps handle photos that do not line up directly with a track point. The preview and review workflow lets users inspect results, manually assign coordinates to unmatched photos, follow GPS positions with arrow keys and undo changes. This gives the process a useful correction path, but automatic matching depends on timestamped tracks; unmatched images can still require individual attention.

Batch operations include progress tracking and cancellation when writing EXIF coordinates. Copy mode preserves originals and supports resume checkpoints, while result reports can be exported as CSV, Markdown or self-contained HTML. These safeguards and reports make it a fit for careful local processing and repeatable batches. Its focus is desktop track-based geotagging, not a hosted team workflow. Photographers who want open-source processing across major desktop systems and several track formats should consider it; those without GPS tracks or seeking a service-based workflow should look elsewhere.
