Google Cloud Speech-to-Text review
A flexible speech API with strong transcription features and usage-based pricing.

Google Cloud Speech-to-Text is a cloud service and API for converting speech audio into text with neural-network recognition models. It is aimed at developers building transcription, captioning, telephony, video, medical-audio, and other speech-enabled workflows. Audio can be submitted through REST, RPC, Google-provided client libraries, or Google Cloud tooling, with synchronous, asynchronous, and streaming options for different processing patterns.
Pricing is usage-based rather than subscription-based. V2 Standard recognition is priced at $0.016 per minute for 0–500,000 minutes per month, with additional volume tiers listed on the pricing page. V2 Dynamic Batch recognition starts at $0.003 per minute and is designed for lower-urgency batch processing. V1 Standard with data logging costs $0.016 per minute after the first 60 minutes per month, while V1 Standard without data logging costs $0.024 per minute after the first 60 minutes. The lowest published rate is therefore tied to V2 Dynamic Batch recognition, while the final cost can vary by API version, recognition model, batch method, audio length, channels, and region.
The standout strength is the breadth of transcription controls available through one API surface. Multiple recognition models cover short audio, long-form content, telephony, video, and medical audio; supported language and regional language codes provide configuration choices; and speaker diarization adds speaker-number tags to recognized words. Word-level time offsets, timestamps, automatic punctuation, spoken punctuation options, and caption generation in SRT or WebVTT support downstream text and subtitle workflows. Google Cloud Storage, client libraries, and Google Cloud Console extend the surrounding ecosystem. Choose it when developer control, flexible processing modes, and detailed recognition output matter. Consider an alternative if you want a simple consumer-facing transcription application rather than an API-led service.
