Gollum review
A focused choice for technical teams that want wiki content managed in Git.

Gollum is an open-source wiki system built around Git repositories, with a local web interface for creating and editing pages. It is aimed at developers and technical teams that want documentation stored alongside repository content and managed through familiar version-control workflows. Self-hosting is supported, and the project runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and the web, with a Ruby library API for reading and writing wiki content.
Its strongest area is technical documentation depth. Gollum supports multiple markup formats, page version history, reverting, media, redirects after page renames, and RSS feeds for recent changes. Technical authors can add Mermaid and PlantUML diagrams, render mathematics with KaTeX and MathJax, include BibTeX citations, and use CriticMarkup annotations. These capabilities make it suitable for engineering notes, project documentation, and repository-centered reference material. The open-source model also fits teams that want to run the wiki themselves rather than choose from paid plans.
The main trade-off is administrative scope. Page permissions are not included, and authentication is not included out of the box; CAS SSO is described as an integration approach. The product also lacks verified integrations, so teams seeking a broader workplace knowledge base with access controls and connected services should consider an alternative. Gollum is a stronger fit when Git-backed storage, revision history, technical markup, and self-hosting matter more than centralized permissions or a wide ecosystem. Its API and platform coverage support custom workflows, but teams should be prepared to manage the surrounding deployment and access setup themselves.
