Our verdict on GoCast

GoCast is an open-source, self-hosted platform for organizations that need to livestream and record lectures. It supports scheduled auditorium broadcasts, automatic recording, video-on-demand uploads, and lecturer-managed scheduling through a self-service dashboard. The platform is suited to education teams that want control over stored streaming data and deployment on their own infrastructure or cloud servers. Its use by the Technical University of Munich as TUM-Live also reflects a university-focused operating model.

The feature set covers the main stages of a lecture video workflow. GoCast can automatically post-process recordings and generate thumbnails, while automatic transcription makes spoken content searchable. During live sessions, audiences can use chat, polls, and questions. Lecturers can also stream through OBS, Zoom, or similar software instead of relying only on scheduled auditorium broadcasts.
