Go.Data is a free, open-source tool for public-health outbreak response, developed by the World Health Organization with GOARN partners. It is aimed at field epidemiologists, contact tracers, data managers and response teams that need to collect case and contact information, coordinate follow-up and examine transmission chains. Its focus is specialized: organizations seeking general-purpose business software or workplace health screening should look elsewhere.

The product brings investigation and follow-up workflows together. Teams can collect case data, trace contacts, configure questionnaires for cases, contact follow-up and laboratory data, and visualize transmission chains. Real-time data entry is designed to work in low- or no-connectivity environments. Multiple users can work concurrently with granular roles and permissions, while import and export support data movement. Teams can manage multiple outbreaks in one installation, which suits response work spanning more than one event.

Deployment flexibility is a notable fit for organizations with different operating conditions: Go.Data supports web, desktop and mobile use, as well as standalone or server installation and self-hosted deployment. WHO says the tool is distributed free of charge, and it became open source in April 2024. Support channels include email, community and documentation. Buyers should choose Go.Data when outbreak investigation, contact follow-up and adaptable deployment are central needs; it is not a broad business suite, and teams should assess whether its focused workflow matches their response operations.

Go.Data pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Tracks cases, contacts and follow-up in one tool
    • Visualizes transmission chains and supports configurable questionnaires
    • Supports offline-capable entry, multiple users and role-based permissions
  • Where it doesn't
    • Focused on outbreak response, not general business operations
    • Requires teams to choose and manage standalone or server deployment
    • No AI features
