GeoTag review
A private, open-source Mac tool for map-based and GPX photo geotagging.

GeoTag is a free, open-source macOS desktop application for adding, changing, and reviewing location metadata in image files or an Apple Photos Library. It suits solo users and small teams who want a private desktop workflow rather than a multi-platform service. Photos can be placed on a map, assigned manual latitude and longitude, or matched to a GPX track log by timestamp. The Free plan is the product’s only published plan and includes the macOS application and photo geolocation tagging.
Its strongest workflow combines batch editing with map review. Multiple selected images can receive location updates together, while reverse geolocation can add city, state, and country metadata. GPX import supports timestamp-based placement, and Apple Photos framework integration updates locations and timestamps in an Apple Photos Library. For image files, ExifTool writes metadata without changing image pixels. Optional backups of original files add a recovery step when modifying a library or collection.
Platform scope is the main boundary: GeoTag is a macOS desktop application, and GeoTag 6 requires macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later; older GeoTag versions support earlier macOS releases. Support is documented through docs, with no additional channels listed. Choose GeoTag if you want a free, open-source Mac utility with GPX matching, reverse geocoding, batch updates, and Apple Photos support. Consider an alternative if you need Windows, mobile, or web deployment, or a broader support model than documentation.
