Gearlynx is a free, open-source Atari Lynx emulator written in C++. It is designed for Atari Lynx I and Lynx II emulation, with support for compressed and homebrew ROMs. Standalone builds are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and BSD, while libretro support extends deployments to additional platforms. It also supports web, iOS, and Android through its listed platform coverage. Players get save states with previews, rewind, run-ahead, controller support, and audio emulation with a configurable low-pass filter.

Its strongest distinction is the depth of its developer tooling. The integrated debugger includes breakpoints, disassembly, memory tools, and hardware inspectors, making Gearlynx a fit for examining software behavior as well as running games. An embedded MCP server supports AI-assisted debugging, with integrations listed for GitHub Copilot, Claude, and Codex. RetroArch and the libretro core add another route for using the emulator within a broader emulation setup.

Multiplayer is handled through ComLynx for up to eight emulator instances, but it uses local shared memory on one computer rather than network netplay. A BIOS is required, so setup includes that dependency before emulation can begin. Gearlynx suits Lynx players who want save-state and performance features, developers who need detailed inspection tools, and users interested in AI-assisted debugging. Those seeking network multiplayer should choose a tool with netplay support instead.
