Garmin eLog review
A capable one-time-cost ELD for drivers who want core compliance without subscriptions.

Garmin eLog is an electronic logging device system for commercial truck drivers and motor carriers. It combines a vehicle diagnostic adapter with an Android or iOS app to record hours of service, duty status, inspections, and related driver records. The system is FMCSA-registered and supports automatic Records of Duty Status recording, driver HOS views, DVIR creation, trailer and shipment records, diagnostics, and malfunction alerts. It is intended for operators who want core ELD functions in a mobile workflow.
Pricing is straightforward: the Garmin eLog plan costs $249.99 USD as a one-time purchase and has no subscription fees. The package includes the Garmin ELD and a 6-pin J1708 adapter, while the system also supports 9-pin J1939 diagnostic ports. Records are stored locally on the compatible mobile device, with USB backup available. This pricing structure favors drivers who prefer a single upfront payment, though the required hardware makes the initial cost higher than a software-only option.
Roadside workflows cover data transfer through USB and Bluetooth, plus inspection submission through email or FMCSA web services. The system also supports offline logging and provides vehicle and driver inspection workflows. Its mobile coverage is limited to Android and iOS, and it does not provide APIs or integrations for broader software connections. Garmin states that the eLog Web Portal is no longer active, so operators use the other supported submission methods. Choose Garmin eLog for core compliance, local records, and a one-time purchase; consider an alternative if integrations, an active web portal, or a broader platform ecosystem are priorities.
