Our verdict on FutureLearn
FutureLearn is an online learning platform for individual learners, professionals, and organisations. Its catalogue includes short courses from universities, cultural institutions, and industry partners, alongside ExpertTracks, microcredentials, bootcamps, and online degrees. Learners can study through video, audio, articles, quizzes, tests, assignments, and discussions. The platform is available on web, iOS, and Android, making it a fit for structured learning across different study formats.
The freemium pricing model gives learners a low-commitment starting point. Limited Access costs $0 per month and provides limited access to short-course materials, delivered weekly, but excludes certificates and test steps. Unlimited Monthly costs $49.99 per month and Unlimited Annual costs $349.99 per year; both include access to 1400+ short courses, immediate content availability, and digital certificates for eligible courses. Individual course upgrades are also available, while certificates can be digital or printed for eligible learners. Pricing and course availability can vary by region.
FutureLearn’s breadth is its main strength. Learners can move from a short course to a microcredential, bootcamp, ExpertTrack, or online degree, while organisations get administration, analytics, user management, and reporting. Learner comments, discussions, replies, and following add a social layer to course participation. It is a strong choice for people seeking university-style learning and credentials across multiple subjects. Learners who only need unrestricted access to one specific course, or who require every course to include certificates and tests under the free option, should compare the individual upgrade or subscription terms for that course before choosing.
