Our verdict on fotobuch

fotobuch is open-source desktop software and a command-line tool for photographers and power users who want to turn folders of images into print-ready photo books locally. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The layout engine arranges multiple photos per page automatically while preserving aspect ratios, photo groups, reading order, and user-defined image weighting. Users can then refine pages by dragging photos and slots before exporting a PDF.

The strongest feature is its focus on controlled, image-heavy production. Automatic multi-photo layouts reduce repetitive page arrangement, while the non-distorting behavior protects the original proportions of each photo. EXIF-generated titles and a metadata appendix add useful structure for documented collections. The command-line workflow also supports scripting and batch operations, making fotobuch a practical fit for repeatable projects rather than one-off, template-led editing. Git-tracked project history provides undo and a record of changes for users who already work comfortably with version control.

fotobuch is free to use and does not include print ordering. Instead, it exports a 300-DPI, print-ready PDF for submission to an external professional printing service. That division keeps the tool focused on local creation, but it means the printing step sits outside the application. There is also no web app, so users looking for browser-based access or a mobile workflow should choose another product. Pick fotobuch when open-source ownership, scripting, aspect-ratio preservation, and PDF control matter most; choose an alternative when guided ordering or cross-device editing is the priority.
