Our verdict on FluentU
FluentU is a language-learning platform for independent learners and educational users who prefer learning through video. It turns Netflix and YouTube content, along with a curated and leveled video library, into lessons with interactive subtitles, word definitions, example sentences, quizzes, flashcards, and spaced-repetition review. The service supports ten target languages and is available on the web, iOS, Android, and through a Chrome extension. Its AI Tutor also adds speaking practice for subscribers.
Pricing is subscription-based, with a 14-day trial and no free plan. Plus costs USD 11.99 per month when billed annually or USD 29.99 per month when billed monthly. Both Plus options include Netflix and YouTube video learning, the Video Dictionary, Word Lookup, Personalized Quiz, Spaced Repetition, and limited AI Tutor daily messages. Super costs USD 16.66 per month with annual billing or USD 39.99 per month with monthly billing. Super includes everything in Plus and provides higher AI Tutor limits. The annual Plus plan is the lowest listed price, while monthly billing offers a shorter commitment.
FluentU’s main strength is the connection between authentic video and structured vocabulary work. Interactive subtitles can provide definitions, examples, and pronunciation information while learners watch, and custom flashcard sets support more tailored review. Personalized quizzes and spaced repetition give the video library a study path beyond passive viewing. Offline access has limits: audio, Quiz mode, and video transcript PDFs can be downloaded, but the videos remain streaming-only. Learners who want Netflix and YouTube integration, vocabulary review, and AI speaking practice should find a clear match here. Those seeking a free plan or downloadable video lessons should choose another app.
