Our verdict on Flowblade

Flowblade is a free, open-source non-linear video editor for Linux. It is designed for users who want desktop editing across video, audio and graphics, from clip cutting and timeline assembly to compositing, titles, effects and rendering. Beginners can work with insertion, overwrite, append and drag-and-drop editing, while more experienced editors get multitrack timelines, keyframed animation, proxy workflows, motion tracking and stabilization. The published category specifications also include four K export support.

Flowblade’s pricing model is straightforward: it is distributed as GPL3 software rather than through commercial paid plans. Its feature set covers core editing and several advanced workflows, including up to 21 combined video and audio tracks, transitions, blend modes, image and audio filters, title controls, animated text, background and transition generators, and batch rendering of multiple output clips. Proxy editing helps with media that is demanding to decode, while GPU encoding through VAAPI and NVENC can support faster output on compatible systems. This makes Flowblade a strong fit for editors who value control and a broad desktop toolset without a subscription structure.

Platform fit is the main boundary. Flowblade is a Linux desktop application, available through Linux distribution repositories and Flatpak, and it works with FFmpeg, MLT and G'MIC. That makes it appropriate for Linux-based editing workflows, but less suitable for teams that need web access, mobile editing, collaboration or cloud storage. Choose Flowblade if Linux support, open-source distribution and multitrack capability are priorities. Choose an alternative if cross-platform access or integrated online collaboration matters more than local desktop editing.
