Our verdict on Flax Engine

Flax Engine is a 3D game engine for independent developers, studios and teams creating games or interactive applications. Its editor combines C++ and C# scripting with visual scripting, while the broader toolkit covers rendering, networking, animation, VFX, behavior trees, localization and open-world development. Deployment spans Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, Android, Web, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Switch. That makes it a fit for teams seeking broad platform coverage without committing to a single scripting workflow.

The free plan covers non-commercial and educational use without charge. Commercial releases generally use a revenue-share license, while custom per-seat or flat-fee licensing is also available. This structure suits learning, prototyping, education and teams evaluating the editor before a commercial launch, but commercial studios should review the licensing model early. Console deployment is documented, and integrations include Steam, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network; platform-specific access or licensing may still be required for console work.

Its strongest case is breadth: realtime global illumination, GPU lightmap baking, VFX tools, animation tools, behavior trees, localization, multiplayer networking and open-world tools sit alongside multiple scripting options. The engine is not open source in the conventional sense, although its source is publicly available under the Flax EULA. Choose Flax when cross-platform 3D scope, visual scripting and access to C++ or C# matter together. Teams requiring a conventional open-source license or a commercial model without revenue sharing should consider alternatives.
