Fjord Launcher review
A cross-platform Java launcher with isolated instances, modpacks, and alternative authentication support.

Fjord Launcher is an open-source desktop launcher for Minecraft Java Edition, available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is aimed at players who need alternatives to standard authentication services, while still wanting a launcher for separate instances, mod loaders, modpacks, Java runtimes, worlds, resource packs, and shader packs. Its fork-based design combines a focused authentication purpose with a broad set of Minecraft management tools.
Authentication and ecosystem support are the clearest differentiators. Fjord Launcher supports Drasl, Ely.by, and Blessing Skin, and it can download mods through Modrinth and CurseForge. Built-in modpack browsing and installation complement imports from ZIP and MRPACK files, while multiple mod loaders help accommodate different modded-instance requirements. Automatic Java runtime detection and download reduces the need to manage Java separately, and isolated instances help keep configurations distinct.
The main consideration is account and project scope. A Microsoft account is required before adding offline or authlib-injector accounts, which may affect how users plan authentication. Fjord Launcher is also specifically for Minecraft Java Edition, so it is not a general launcher for every Minecraft edition. As a soft fork of Prism Launcher, some capabilities are inherited from the upstream project rather than being unique to Fjord Launcher. Choose it if alternative authentication integrations, cross-platform availability, and modded-instance management are priorities. Users seeking a launcher outside Java Edition or without the Microsoft-account prerequisite should consider an alternative.

- Where it doesn't
- Requires a Microsoft account before adding offline or authlib-injector accounts
- Focused on Minecraft Java Edition rather than broader Minecraft editions
- As a soft fork, some functionality follows upstream Prism Launcher behavior
