Our verdict on Fizzy
Fizzy is a free, open-source pixel art editor for creators and game developers working on sprites and animations. It runs in a browser and is also available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its workspace combines tabs, split views, reorderable layouts, a file tree, folder-based projects, file search, and drag-and-drop importing. Drawing tools cover pixel editing, erasing, color sampling, filling, selection, and transformation, while Lospec palette support adds a dedicated palette workflow.
Fizzy’s strongest area is sprite production. It supports animation creation, frame preview, and frame-rate adjustment, then extends the workflow with PNG sprite-sheet importing and grid slicing. Sprite origins support alignment with game frameworks, and built-in packing can produce a texture atlas with origin and animation metadata. Export options include GIF, packed texture atlas, and .atlas JSON. Indexed color and sprite-sheet export are supported, making the editor suitable for preparing animated game assets as well as drawing them.
The main boundary is scope. Tilemap and level tools are not current features, and onion skinning is not verified, so users who need scene construction or more advanced animation guidance may need another tool. Fizzy is a strong fit for developers and artists who want an open-source, cross-platform sprite editor with integrated slicing and atlas preparation. It is less suitable for teams seeking a complete 2D game editor or a pixel-art package centered on tilemaps and level design.
