Our verdict on FindAPhD
FindAPhD is a web-based directory for prospective doctoral students. It brings together PhD projects, doctoral programmes, studentships and related postgraduate research opportunities from institutions worldwide. Search can be refined by discipline, subject, location, institution, PhD type and funding, while additional tools cover postgraduate research advice, funding guidance, email updates and supervisor discovery. Student access is free, making the service particularly relevant to applicants comparing funded PhD routes across countries and institutions.
Its ecosystem fit is straightforward: FindAPhD is available on the web and connects with PhD CONNECT. The platform also supports international discovery rather than limiting searches to one national system, with browsing by subject, country and institution. Email updates can help applicants continue monitoring PhD opportunities and funding after an initial search. For students who want a specialized research-opportunity directory, the combination of structured filters, advice and supervisor search gives the product a broader discovery workflow than a listings-only site.
The main trade-off is focus. FindAPhD is built around PhD and postgraduate research opportunities, so it is not the right fit for someone comparing general colleges or undergraduate courses. Its comparison feature is useful within the doctoral-search context, but the service remains primarily a directory for projects, programmes, studentships and provider profiles. Universities and other education providers have paid advertising products, while students use the directory free of charge. Choose FindAPhD if your priority is finding funded doctoral opportunities, international listings or supervisors by research interest. Choose an alternative if your search extends beyond doctoral study or requires a broader college-search platform.
