fido2-lib is an open-source JavaScript library for developers implementing FIDO2 and WebAuthn server functionality. It fits Node.js and Deno applications, with browser-based WebAuthn clients handling the client side. The library focuses on protocol operations rather than becoming a complete hosted authentication product: it generates registration and authentication challenges, parses and validates responses, and supports CommonJS and ESM imports.

Its main strength is the depth of its WebAuthn implementation surface. fido2-lib supports packed, TPM, Android SafetyNet, FIDO U2F, none, and Apple attestation formats. It also supports authenticator metadata services, including multiple simultaneous collections, alongside ECDSA and RSA cryptography. Because it does not implement networking protocols, teams can keep it independent of REST or other messaging layers and fit it into their own server architecture.

The trade-off is scope. This is self-hosted developer tooling, not a hosted authentication service or an end-to-end administration product. Teams must provide the surrounding application, deployment, and operational design themselves. Community and documentation support are the listed support channels, so organizations seeking managed implementation or a packaged administrative experience should consider a different type of product. fido2-lib is a strong fit for small, mid-market, or enterprise teams that want direct control over WebAuthn server behavior and have JavaScript development capacity; it is less suitable for buyers seeking a ready-to-run biometric authentication service.

    • Offers CommonJS and ESM support for Node.js and Deno applications
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires developers to build the surrounding authentication service
    • Self-hosted deployment does not provide a hosted administration layer
    • Community and documentation support may not suit teams seeking vendor support
