For qualitative research projects, f4 brings transcription and text analysis together in one software suite. The current offering combines f4transkript with f4x and f4analyse; the legacy f4transkript is no longer sold on its own. Researchers can work with automatic transcription, correct transcripts manually, differentiate speakers, mark pauses, and navigate recordings through timestamps. After transcription, qualitative tools support quotes, cases, groups, and codes, making this more suited to a research workflow than to transcription alone.

Licenses are time-limited purchases, and automatic transcription is priced separately in hour allotments. Student licenses cost €25 for three months or €33 for six months; both exclude automatic transcription. Other f4 software terms cost €149 for six months, €299 for two years, or €449 for five years, also without automatic transcription. Automatic transcription costs €25 for two hours, €44 for five hours, or €88 for ten hours. This structure lets buyers select a license duration and add transcription time as needed, but requires budgeting for two components when AI transcription is part of the workflow.

The feature mix is the main reason to consider f4: users can move from audio or video transcription into coded qualitative analysis, and export transcripts as DOCX, RTF, or SRT, with analysis results exportable to Word and Excel. It is listed for Windows, macOS, Linux, and web, though the vendor describes Linux as untested and unsupported. Researchers who need transcription plus qualitative coding may find the combined scope a fit; buyers seeking only a standalone transcription tool, or a subscription with automatic transcription bundled in, should compare alternatives.

f4transkript pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Combines automatic and manual transcription with correction tools
    • Includes speaker differentiation, timestamps, and playback navigation
    • Adds qualitative coding and exports analysis to Word and Excel
  • Where it doesn't
    • Automatic transcription is purchased separately by hour allotment
    • Licenses expire after set terms rather than continuing as subscriptions
    • The legacy f4transkript is no longer sold as a standalone product
