Our verdict on Expertiza

Expertiza is an open-source web application for courses and educational assignments. It supports peer review for articles, code, websites, URLs, and wiki pages, making it suitable for instructors who assess varied learning objects rather than a single submission format. Team projects, team-based assignments, configurable questionnaires, rubrics, anonymous reviews, scoring, and instructor reporting extend its use across collaborative coursework.

Its strongest differentiator is breadth within peer assessment. Instructors can combine rubric-based scoring with configurable questionnaires, team assignments, anonymous peer reviews, moderation tools, reviewer-status management, and review reports. That range can support structured evaluation workflows for both individual and team submissions. Expertiza is a good fit when an institution wants open-source flexibility and needs peer assessment to cover more than documents alone.

Moodle integration is a practical fit for courses already using that platform. Moodle LTI provides single sign-on and assignment access, while grade pass-back sends results to the Moodle gradebook. Expertiza is available as a hosted web application or through deployment from its public source code, giving organizations a choice between managed access and self-hosting. Reviewer assignment remains manual, so instructors must manage allocation and reviewer status themselves. Moodle users seeking configurable, open-source peer assessment should consider Expertiza; courses that require automatic reviewer allocation or broader integration coverage may need a different fit.
