Our verdict on Enonic XP

Enonic XP is a headless and hybrid content management platform for organizations building websites, digital experiences, and API-driven applications. It suits development teams that want self-hosting alongside managed cloud hosting, structured content models, and visual editorial tools. Content Studio provides visual page editing and interactive previews, while content layers support localization across markets and languages. Granular permissions and project roles also make it suitable for teams with differentiated editorial responsibilities.

Pricing is freemium. The Free plan is aimed at developers and includes solution templates, developer guides, and a path to getting up and running in minutes. The Professional plan includes all functions, SLA options, an AI assistant, and single sign-on, with pricing handled through Enonic. Enterprise also includes all functions, with up to 99.99% uptime, priority support, customization to the customer's architecture, and security functions. This structure makes the free tier a practical starting point for development, while larger deployments need a plan discussion.

Its strongest technical focus is structured, API-driven content delivery. Custom content types and schemas organize content, GraphQL exposes it to applications, and the Image API supports resizing, cropping, format conversion, and quality adjustments. Custom APIs, scheduled tasks, content event listeners, applications, and extension points provide room for tailored integrations. The main trade-off is that built-in headless delivery is documented through GraphQL, while other protocols require custom HTTP APIs. Teams wanting a visual CMS with self-hosting and extensibility should consider Enonic XP; teams prioritizing broad ready-made integration coverage or a different API standard may prefer an alternative.
