Our verdict on Enfuse

Enfuse is an open-source command-line image-fusion program for photographers and image-processing workflows that prepare aligned source images before blending. Its focus-stacking function combines overlapping frames to create extended-depth-of-field images, while exposure, saturation, and contrast criteria support broader image-fusion work. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it suitable for users who want a cross-platform utility they can incorporate into an existing workflow rather than a standalone alignment-and-stacking application.

The published model is straightforward: Enfuse is free and open source, with no paid tiers described. Its depth comes from control rather than packaging. Users can adjust blending weights, configure pyramid-blending levels, apply hard masks for sharper focus-stack results, and use alpha-channel masks to exclude image regions. Wildcard and list-based input files can support repeatable command-line workflows, while TIFF and JPEG compression controls and optional OpenEXR support address different output requirements. An OpenMP parallel-processing option is also available for workflows that can benefit from concurrent processing.

The main workflow boundary is alignment: Enfuse does not align images itself, so source frames must be prepared with another tool. That makes it a focused blending component, not an all-in-one focus-stacking application. Its older official documentation may also require users to consult the project repository when working through current maintenance details. Choose Enfuse if you are comfortable managing alignment separately and want precise, scriptable control over image fusion. Choose an alternative if automatic alignment or a graphical, guided stacking process is central to your workflow.
