EdgeCase Equalizer review
A focused open-source desktop system for solo, private-pay therapy practices.

EdgeCase Equalizer is desktop practice-management software for solo therapists conducting private-pay talk therapy. It brings client timelines, session records, communications, absences, items, uploads, billing, expenses, scheduling, backups, and local AI-assisted note writing into one application. The software is free and open source under AGPL-3.0, with downloads for macOS and Linux. Its focus is a therapist managing a practice independently rather than a clinic coordinating several practitioners or a service built around online client access.
The local-first design is the clearest differentiator. Data is stored and encrypted on the user’s computer, with an encrypted SQLite database and encrypted attachments. Full and incremental backups support restore workflows and cloud-folder storage, including integrations with iCloud, Dropbox, and Google Drive. This setup suits therapists who want direct control over practice records and a desktop workflow. The local AI scribe can draft and edit session notes, while client timelines organize sessions, communications, absences, items, and uploads.
Scheduling and financial administration cover the main private-practice tasks: recurring appointments, reminders, meeting links, calendar event export, Apple Calendar integration, PDF invoices, statements, payment tracking, write-offs, income and expense tracking, and financial reports. The boundaries are equally important. EdgeCase Equalizer does not include telehealth, online booking, a client portal, insurance claims, mobile apps, or multi-practitioner management. Choose it if local storage, open-source control, and practice administration matter most; choose another option if your work depends on integrated telehealth, client self-service, insurance workflows, or a broader web and mobile platform.
