ECHELON is Stone Ridge Technology’s GPU-based reservoir simulator for energy companies and reservoir engineers working with complex models. It supports black-oil and compositional simulation, grids and models up to billions of cells, and coupling between reservoirs and integrated surface networks. Its fit is strongest for mid-market and enterprise teams that need simulation scale, optimization workflows, or flexibility to run locally, on HPC clusters, or in the cloud. Teams seeking a narrower or simpler modeling tool may find this breadth unnecessary.

The standout capability is scaling simulation across GPUs, including multi-GPU execution, alongside support for complex gridding and large models. Workflows cover history matching, sensitivity analysis, and field-development optimization; SimDISCOVER visualizes 3D simulation results and well data. ECHELON also addresses carbon capture and storage and low-enthalpy geothermal simulation. The Petrel plug-in supports model export, job submission, and result retrieval for local, HPC-cluster, and cloud execution. Integrations include Petrel, Eclipse, AWS, RunPod, and SRT Cloud, making it relevant where those tools and environments are already part of engineering workflows.

Licensing is available as onsite perpetual, onsite lease, or cloud access. According to the vendor’s published plan descriptions, cloud licensing charges per use of simulations, requires no local hardware, and provides access to the latest hardware; onsite options offer perpetual or lease licensing. Prices require a sales inquiry. That structure gives teams a choice between owned onsite licensing and usage-based cloud execution, but buyers should clarify costs and deployment requirements with the vendor before planning adoption. Stone Ridge offers email and phone support. Choose ECHELON when simulation scale and execution flexibility matter; consider alternatives if your work does not need its advanced reservoir capabilities or you need transparent published pricing.

ECHELON pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • GPU and multi-GPU scaling for large, complex reservoir models
    • Petrel plug-in supports local, HPC-cluster, and cloud execution
    • Pay-per-use cloud option requires no local hardware
  • Where it doesn't
    • Licensing requires a sales quote rather than published prices
    • Advanced simulation workflows may exceed smaller teams’ needs
    • The Petrel plug-in is the specifically documented Windows workflow
