Our verdict on easySim

easySim sells prepaid, data-only eSIM bundles for travelers in Japan, using the KDDI network with 4G and 5G availability. Plans have fixed data allowances and last 7, 15, or 30 days. Travelers who want a Japan-only connection, can use a compatible iOS or Android phone or tablet, and do not need traditional calls or SMS are the clearest fit. The eSIM can be installed before departure, with data starting after arrival and connection to a local network.

The published Japan plans are one-time purchases: 1 GB for 7 days costs £3.99, 3 GB for 15 days costs £7.99, 5 GB for 30 days costs £12.99, 10 GB for 30 days costs £21.99, 20 GB for 30 days costs £35.99, and 50 GB for 30 days costs £61.99. The range gives short-trip and month-long options, but every plan has a fixed allowance. Travelers unsure how much data they need should weigh that limit against the option to buy another destination bundle and add it to the existing eSIM.

Hotspot and tethering are supported on compatible devices, which can help travelers share the connection, while local-connection activation allows installation to happen before travel. This is a practical fit for people who primarily need mobile data and value a prepaid, fixed bundle. It is less suitable for anyone who requires calls or SMS through the eSIM, or prefers an allowance that is not fixed. The vendor's stated money-back guarantee applies only if installation or activation could not be completed, subject to contacting the company within six months and no successful installation or data use; it is not a general refund period.
