E*TRADE Developer API provides REST and streaming interfaces for applications connected to E*TRADE accounts. Developers can retrieve balances, positions, portfolio holdings, cost and gain details, quotes, option chains and market data, while also previewing, placing, modifying, canceling and checking equity or option orders. OAuth authorization connects user accounts, and REST responses are available in JSON or XML. It is aimed at teams building brokerage integrations for solo, small, mid-market or enterprise use.

The platform itself is free, while E*TRADE states that normal per-trade fees apply when applications trade. Setup requires an E*TRADE account and consumer key. Separate production and sandbox environments support development workflows, with the sandbox providing sample responses. Production access requires agreements, and applications using vendor keys require approval, so teams should account for those access steps before planning a live integration.

Its strongest fit is an application that needs both account data and trading operations through one E*TRADE-focused API surface. OAuth, portfolio and tax-lot data, market-data access, and streaming order-status notifications cover a broad brokerage workflow rather than a single narrow function. Teams seeking established brokerage API integrations can use the documented REST and streaming capabilities with cloud deployment. Organizations that do not operate around E*TRADE accounts, or that need access outside this brokerage environment, should consider a different integration target.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Production access requires agreements, and vendor keys need approval.
    • Applications require an E*TRADE account and consumer key.
    • Trading incurs normal per-trade fees even though the platform is free.
