- Modeling centers on solid parts and constrained sketches
Our verdict on Dune 3D
Dune 3D is a free, open-source parametric CAD application for designing solid parts. It suits users who want to build geometry from constrained 2D and 3D sketches, especially on Linux or Windows. Its toolset covers extrusion, lathe, revolve, loft and pipe operations, along with fillets and chamfers. That makes it a focused option for part modeling rather than a broad engineering suite.
Its workflow combines geometric constraints with reference geometry and file exchange. STEP models can be imported as references, and DXF files can also be imported. For output, designs can be exported as STEP or STL 3D files, or as SVG and DXF 2D paths. Distance and angular constraints support measurements within sketches. The published feature set therefore fits users who need constrained modeling and common exchange formats, but its documented scope does not extend to listed assembly workflows or broader engineering features.
Dune 3D is distributed for Linux and Windows, with Flatpak and Arch Linux AUR listed as integration or distribution options. It is open-source and free, so there are no paid tiers to compare. Choose it if you want a no-cost tool centered on constrained sketches and solid-part operations, and if its platform and format support fit your workflow. If your work depends on assemblies or a wider set of engineering capabilities, a broader CAD application may be a better fit.
