Domibus review
A capable eDelivery foundation, but not a complete electronic invoicing application.

Domibus is open-source software from the European Commission for organisations building secure electronic document exchange. It implements an eDelivery AS4 Access Point and supports interoperable, reliable message and document exchange between connected organisations. Its on-premise deployment and API access make it a fit for teams that want to operate eDelivery infrastructure themselves rather than adopt a packaged invoicing application. Domibus is particularly relevant to technical teams responsible for integration, message handling and deployment control.
Its strongest area is operational coverage around electronic exchange. Dynamic discovery using eDelivery profiles supports partner routing, while the REST Plugin provides authenticated operations for creating, retrieving, sending and managing messages and attachments. Webhook notifications can connect exchange events to surrounding systems, and resend and error-inspection workflows support message administration. Plugins for web services, file systems and JMS help align Domibus with different application environments. Distribution for Apache Tomcat, WildFly and WebLogic, together with Hardware Security Module support, gives deployment teams several integration and security-oriented options.
The trade-off is scope. Domibus provides infrastructure for electronic data exchange, not invoice creation, accounting or a complete electronic invoicing workflow. Teams seeking invoice-specific validation, invoice formats or direct Peppol access should consider an alternative with those capabilities built in. Domibus suits organisations with the technical capacity to integrate and run an access point, especially when self-hosting and AS4 exchange are central requirements. It is less suitable for buyers looking for a ready-to-use invoicing system with business-user features and a broader application layer.
Domibus pros and cons
- Where it wins
- AS4 Access Point implementation for secure, interoperable document exchange
- REST APIs, webhooks, retries and error inspection support operations
- Web service, file-system, JMS and HSM support broaden deployment options
- Where it doesn't
- Does not provide invoice creation or accounting application features
- No invoice-specific validation or formats
- Requires self-hosted deployment and integration work
