DisplayGrid review
A capable free self-hosted signage platform for technical teams.

DisplayGrid is a source-available, self-hosted digital signage platform for restaurants, churches, schools, event venues, and community spaces. It gives teams a dashboard for managing screens, zones, playlists, assets, layouts, schedules, and emergency overrides. Displays can run through native kiosk apps, browsers, Raspberry Pi Chromium kiosks, or Docker-based deployments. The feature set suits technical teams that want control over deployment without a recurring cloud subscription.
The published plan structure is simple: Free is the sole plan, with self-hosting, no subscription, and no cloud account required. The vendor states that DisplayGrid is free forever. That plan includes multi-zone screen layouts, drag-and-drop playlist building, day, time, and date-range scheduling, and support for images, video, PDFs, web pages, HTML, clocks, text, HLS streams, and WebRTC streams. Cached playlists support offline playback, while screen health monitoring and emergency full-screen overrides address operational needs. Role-based access control and a token-authenticated REST API add administrative and automation options.
DisplayGrid fits environments where integrations can be assembled through Home Assistant, n8n, cron, go2rtc, or MediaMTX, and where Docker or another self-hosted approach is acceptable. Its REST API, real-time WebSocket updates, and live-stream slides extend its usefulness beyond static playlists. The trade-off is a narrower ecosystem: teams looking for a large catalog of ready-made integrations or a managed cloud service should choose another platform. DisplayGrid is the stronger fit for technical operators who value free self-hosting, offline operation, and control over screen infrastructure.

- Where it doesn't
- Integrations are limited to a small set of automation tools
- Self-hosted deployment requires technical ownership
- Source-available, not OSI open source
